Do Naturopathic Doctors interact with other health care professionals?
Yes, here at Brooklin Naturopath we are strong believers in INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE. We believe that a team approach is beneficial for patients and upon obtaining consent we frequently contact other healthcare providers. Referral to other practitioners such as medical doctors, chiropractors, massage therapies, psychotherapists when necessary provides an all inclusive integrative approach to your specific health care concerns.
What is the difference between alternative medicine and integrative medicine?
Alternative therapies are often antagonistic to medical care and are usually provided by untrained and unregulated practitioners. Integrative medicine is an all inclusive approach by taking the best of all models of medicine and using them in the most effective way to treat your health concerns.
How is Naturopathic Medicine regulated?
Naturopathic doctors are the only regulated health professional in Ontario that have extensive training in natural medicine as well as the ability to diagnose disease using conventional methods. Naturopathic doctors are regulated in Ontario under the Drugless Therapy Act and are regulated by the Board of Directors of Drugless Therapy - Naturopathy (BDDT-N). The BDDT-N functions to ensure that Naturopathic doctors are properly qualified to practice naturopathic medicine and that they follow the appropriate standards of practice. Within the next few years, the profession of Naturopathic medicine will be included in the Regulated Health Professionals Act (RHPA). The RHPA regulates most other health care professionals in Ontario.
Will I have to take a lot of supplements?
Since Naturopathic treatment is individual it depends on the chronicity and severity of the case. Often in the beginning of your treatment some supplements may be required but we are always working towards health maintenance with minimal supplements.
What do you treat?
Any person of any age, with virtually any chronic or acute condition may benefit from Naturopathic treatment.
What type of commitment is required?
80-100% level of commitment is required. It ultimately comes down to your willingness to evoke change.
Is Naturopathic medicine safe?
Naturopathic medicine emphasizes gentle, natural source medicines and non-invasive therapies. Side effects with naturopathic therapies are rare and contraindications or interactions between naturopathic remedies and conventional medicine is well investigated in order to provide safe and comprehensive treatments.
What is the difference between Naturopathic Medicine and herbalists, wholistic nutritionist, homeopaths etc.?
Naturopathic doctors are the only practitioners who are licensed professionals. The terms herbalist, wholistic nutritionist, homeopath, are not protected by the law and people with different levels of training can use these titles and not subject to regulatory processes.
What can I expect from the first visit?
The intial visit for new patients requires a thorough health history. Typically the first two visits are needed to conduct patient intiation and provide recommendations for your health.
What if I am taking prescription medication can I still receive Naturopathic treatment?
Naturopathic doctors are trained to understand the effects of prescription medications in the body and interactions between prescription medications and natural therapies. Naturopathic doctors can safely prescribe natural treatments that will work to enhance the effectiveness, reduce the side effects and rebalance any deficiency from your prescription medications. A Naturopathic doctor will never recommend that you stop taking any prescription medications unless they have written consent from your medical doctor.
I have no medical doctor what services can you provide?
Brooklin Naturopath can provide many health care services for you. Naturopathic doctors are trained to perform full screeing physical exams (including gynecological exams and Pap tests) as well as standard lab and urine tests.
